AbstractProfile soil moisture was monitored using Odyssey® Xtreem Multi-Profile Soil Moisture Loggers based on the capacitance method. Each logger measured volumetric water content at five depths: 5, 15, 25, 35, and 45 cm, representing the 0–10, 10–20, 20–30, 30–40, and 40–50 cm soil layers, respectively. In the thinned plot, 14 soil moisture sensors, SM14 and SM1–SM13, were installed at 1 m intervals across the thinning rows. SM1 was positioned 40 cm from the residual tree stems, whereas SM14, SM2, and SM3 were located 1 m from the stems, allowing soil moisture dynamics to be compared along a gradient from stem-near positions to the center of thinning rows. In the control plot, six sensors, SM16–SM21, were installed at 1 m intervals beneath the closed canopy. Soil moisture was recorded at 10-min intervals from May 1 to December 10, 2025. These profile measurements were used to quantify changes in soil water storage during rainfall and rainless events and to estimate throughfall, forest floor evapotranspiration, and root water uptake using a multi-layer soil water balance approach.
