| Abstract | Forest floor evapotranspiration was measured directly using weighing lysimeters installed in both the thinned and control plots. Each lysimeter consisted of a pot with a radius of 11 cm, filled with 20 cm of in-situ soil, and placed on a waterproof electronic balance. Changes in pot weight were recorded as voltage data every minute, averaged over 10-min intervals, and stored using a CR1000X data logger. The recorded voltage was converted to mass using calibration equations, and the mass change was then converted to water depth by dividing it by the pot opening area. Drainage from the bottom of each pot was allowed to prevent water accumulation. In the thinned plot, six lysimeters were installed to measure forest floor evaporation under different surface conditions. Lysimeters Nos. 1–3 were used to measure bare soil evaporation without litter, whereas Nos. 4–6 were used to measure evaporation from soil covered with a litter layer reproduced at the field thickness. In the control plot, three lysimeters were installed under litter-covered conditions. These lysimeter measurements were used to directly quantify forest floor evapotranspiration and to validate estimates derived from soil moisture changes. | |
